英語ニュースの達人、大武正樹さんをお招きします。大武さんはVital Japanの設立当初からのメンバーでもあります。

英語ニュースの読み方や書き方のツボをプレゼンいただくだけではなく、参加者とともに、ニュースで使われる凝ったタイトルや表現についても考えます。

勉強会では、show-and-tellとして、英語ニュースの中で参加者が自分で見つけた工夫された/面白い表現を英語で発表していただきます。グループに分かれて、自分が見つけた工夫された/面白い表現をグループ内で披露。その中でも面白い！というものは全員の前でも発表していただく予定です。

NHK国際放送局　英語ニュース　チーフ・プロデューサー
上智大学英語学科卒。NHK国際局入局後、AP通信社への派遣などを経て、現在は海外向けの英語ニュース番組Newslineの英語ニュースデスク。
高２でカリフォルニア州の公立校に留学（AFS）。大学時代はJNSA基金 （中学生の英語弁論大会「高円宮杯」を運営する学生団体）所属。
英語は主にNHKのラジオ講座と英米の英語ニュース番組から学ぶ。 趣味＝テニス、バイク、英語ニュース番組を視聴して、言葉遊びなどを “座布団一枚”と称してメモすること。

政権交代後、初の国政選挙が終わりました。
今回の選挙の大きな争点の一つは、消費税を含めた財政問題。

8月の勉強会では、久々に外部のゲストスピーカーは招かずに、参加者のディスカッションを中心としたセッションといたします。様々な問題が山積する現在の日本ですが、その中でも経済・財政問題は、この国のあり方を考える上で根本的な問題。 今回はこの問題に焦点を当て、何をどう変えれば日本が再活性化できるのかを参加者で自由にディスカッションしたいと思います。

最初にオーガナイザーより10分程度で、テーマのポイントやデータを整理・プレゼンの上でグループディスカッションに入ります。 20分程度のディスカッションを、顔ぶれを変えながら合計3回行い、最後に 全体での共有とディスカッションをします。
ディスカッションは、参加者どうしでの対話や気づきを重視し、全体で意見や知識を共有しやすいようなWorld Cafe形式で行います。

参加者での対話や気づきを中心としたセッションですので、経済・財政問題に仕事で携わる方も、これから学びたいという方もお気軽にご参加ください。

また、今回は参加者での交流の時間も多く設けます。
前半と後半の間では休憩とNetworkingの時間として30分とりますので、ホワイエで飲物やスナックを片手にぜひご交流ください。

While there are many important issues in Japan's public policy debate, the economic and fiscal policy is the most fundamental of all.

At our August meeting, we will be discussing what needs to be changed in the economic and fiscal policies of Japan. After a brief introductory presenation by a Vital Japan orngazer, the participants will be sharing
knowledge and exchanging views in groups.

There will be a lot of networking opportunies including half an hour breank and networking time in between. Those who want to share their views on economic issues and network with other professionals
are welcome to this session.

“Hidden Champions” are little known world market leaders. Scattered across the globe, these highly successful companies are known only by a handful of experts.

This concealment is in stark contrast to their dominant market positions. Many of them have global market shares of over 50 percent; some hold as much as 70 or 90 percent. They are the vanguard of globalization.

Among the approximately 2,000 Hidden Champions worldwide, about 200 are located in Japan. Regarding strategy, organization, and operations, they resemble their Western peers. However, there are also some striking differences. For example, Western Hidden Champions can be found in almost all industries, whereas 95% of their Japanese peers are industrial manufacturers. There are almost no Japanese service companies that qualify as Hidden Champions.

Furthermore, the Japanese Hidden Champions are on average twice as large as their Western peers. They seem to need a higher critical mass to conquer global markets.

Finally, the Japanese Hidden Champions are generally less profitable, even in good times.

Based on recent research, the seminar will examine the success strategies of the Japanese Hidden Champions. How do they compare with their Western peers? How do they cope with the “Kaisha Dilemma” ? maintaining “Japaneseness” while at the same time becoming a global firm?
What are the lessons for small and midsize companies, for large corporations, for investors, and for politics, regions, and the country?

Dr. Stefan Lippert is a business school professor and management consultant.
He teaches MBA classes at Kenichi Ohmae Graduate School of Business, Temple University Japan, Hitotsubashi University ICS in Tokyo and at other business schools in Japan and overseas. Dr. Lippert is an active scholar and author in the areas of international strategy, marketing, and leadership.
His current interests include the internationalization of Japanese firms, especially the “Hidden Champions”.

In his consulting work, Dr. Lippert advises Japanese and international companies primarily on international strategy, organizational transformation and cross-border M&A.
He was the Managing Partner Japan of Simon-Kucher & Partners, a global strategy & marketing consultancy.
Prior to that, Dr. Lippert worked with McKinsey& Company.

今年50周年を迎えた日米同盟。政権交代の荒波の中で、その同盟が大きく揺れています。

普天間問題の解決が待たれる中、米国大使館でPolitical-Military Unit Chiefを務め、米国側でこの問題の責任者の一人でもあるMr. Joseph M. Young をお招きし、米国から見た日米同盟とはどのようなものかを語っていただきます。

なお、Mr.Youngには勉強会全体を通してご参加いただく予定ですが、普天間問題の当事者として多忙を極めていらっしゃるため、当日の状況しだいでは、勉強会の初めの1時間程度のプレゼンテーションとＱ＆Ａのみとなる可能性もございます。

As Political-Military Unit Chief, Mr. Joseph M. Young is in charge of the Embassy office that has responsibility for all issues bearing on the U.S.-Japan Alliance.

After finishing his undergraduate work at Borromeo College and earning a Master’s degree in Foreign Service at Georgetown University,
he joined the U.S. Department of State in 1991. He has served as
Consular Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore,
Political Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi,
Economic Researcher at the Foreign Service Institute in Washington D.C.,
Economic Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing,
Aviation Negotiations Officer in the Bureau of Economic,
Energy and Business Affairs at the Department of State,
and Political-Economic Section Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Dublin.
Following Japanese language training, he was appointed
as the Political-Military Unit Chief at U.S. Embassy, Tokyo, in July 2009.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the United States - Japan alliance, but the powershift of the Japanese government may have somewhat unsettled the relationship.

At our 80th Meeting, we invite Mr. Joseph M. Young, Political-Military Unit Chief, U.S. Embassy, to go over what the alliacee means, and reexamine the relationship between Japan and the US.

After one hour presentation and Q&A with the speaker, there will be group discussion sessions of the participants.
